Welcome
to the 2008-09 Ventura Mariner travel hockey season. As you can see,
starting with the website, there are several changes in the Mariner program for
the 2008-09 hockey season. The Ventura Mariners will not be fielding any Tier 2
(AA) teams in 2008-09. Instead all Tier teams will be in SoCal Titan uniforms.
The Titans fielded Midget 16 and 18 AAA teams over the past two seasons and have
proved to be the necessary ingredient to move the highest level hockey players
along to college and junior programs. For Titan Tier I/II information go to
www.sctitanhockey.com or just click the "SoCal Titan" link.
Beginning with the 2008-09 season the Mariners (and the Titans) are evolving to
a program that is even more aimed at player development. Therefore, in the
2008-09 season all players will be on the ice a minimum three times per week.
For A/B teams that will be two team practices and one skill clinic with Titan
Midget Major AAA Head Coach Eric Ballard; for Titan AA teams and Midget Minor
AAA team that will be three team practices weekly; and for the Titan Midget
Major AAA team that will be four team practices weekly.
For those that have been around the rink this summer you will have noticed the
construction on the second floor between the rinks. For the 2008-09 season all
Mariner and Titan players will have access to the new state of the art on site
off ice training facility that has been designed and constructed by Steve
Phillips of Hockey Contractor.
The Mariners will again be fielding teams at the Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam,
and Midget divisions. While we hope to field those teams at the highest
possible level we are more focused on player development though additional ice
time, and playing at a level that is consistently competitive. Our goal is for
each team to play at a level where nearly each game, winning or losing, is
close. Therefore, while we will target A level teams in all divisions, we will
adjust accordingly if necessary to maintain the optimum development of the
players.
We are confident in the coaching staff we have assembled for the 2008-09 season.
For the first time we had an abundance of coaches and had the luxury to make
choices. All coaches have been fully informed, and are on board with our
increase in practice ice time and development of our players. We are certainly
aware that our coaching staff will not please all players, but we have done our
best to combine coaches, and assistant coaches who can work together so that
each player can have a positive 2008-09 season.
Finally, we are doing our best to keep costs to a minimum while still
maintaining the integrity of the program. While there is a small increase in
dues for the 2008-09 season, there is also a significant increase in practice
ice for every player. We believe the Mariner and Titan programs will continue to
be among the lowest cost programs in the SoCal area while offering the highest
amount of ice time, quality coaching staff, and program geared for player
development.
Thank you for considering the Mariners and Titans for your 2008-09 travel hockey
season.
